Bolaven Plateau – Touch the Sky
The Bolaven plateau is a vast highland rising east of Pakse to an altitude of 1000-1350 meters above sea level. Created by a gigantic extinct volcano, its cooler climate, abundant rainfall and fertile soil inspired the French colonialists in the early 20th century to introduce large scale cash crop farming like coffee, tea, rubber and tobacco to the local tribes, namely the Laven (Bo-Laven=Home of the Laven) , Alak, Katu, Ta-oy and Suay. Numerous rivers cutting deep into the hard volcanic bedrock have created a wide variety of waterfalls, some of them easily accessible by road. Day 9: Champassak – 4000 Island – Khong Island – Champasak
Breakfast with fantastic view over the Mekong, then cross over to take the route AH 13 to Nakasang, the hub to the 4000 islands.
The 4000 islands (Si Phan Don), is an area dotted with more or less large islands lying on the Mekong River, in Southern Laos, on the border with Cambodia. Despite the high number of islands (which varies depending on the season, given that during the rainy season the Mekong submerges many of them), there are basically three main ones: Don Det, Don Khone and Don Khong.
These places, despite being very popular among travelers who find themselves in this area of Southern Laos, have managed to maintain a truly authentic appearance and ambience, where life still flows simple, isolated and placid, perfect for a few days of total relaxation, between rich vegetation and the Mekong River as the main protagonist.
The French colonialists built here the first railway in Laos, in order to circumvent the insurmountable cataracts of Liphi and Khonephapeng waterfalls disrupting the flow of goods down the Mekong. The bridge, nowadays connecting Done Det and Done Khone, was built for that purpose, and there is even an old rusty French locomotive on display, a remnant from the colonial past. Another attraction of the 4000 islands, the Mekong river dolphins, have unfortunately left Laotian waters for good. The work on the new dam, fishermen’s activities and too many tourist boats, scared the last of the Irrawaddy dolphins away, because they didn’t feel safe anymore and consequently migrated across the border to Cambodian waters and where they can be found now in large especially around Kratie.
All that is left is a memorial at Ban Hangkhone.
The first stop will be at the beautiful Khone Island, where once you arrive, you will have the opportunity to admire several colonial houses, the first Laotian railway station with its locomotives made to bypass the natural barrier of the waterfalls during the era of French colonialism and the flourishing trade with China.
Next you will reach the beautiful Liphi waterfall, also known as Somphamith, which forms a natural border line between Laos and Cambodia.
Most popular is strolling through the surrounding countryside and exploring Liphi waterfall, which is also called “The Devil’s Corridor”.
A daring zipline offers a 2hour spectacular journey during which you fly across the Mekong 6 times in a breath-taking, adrenaline pumping manner you will remember for a long time.
From Khone Island you will take the boat back to the mainland and then reach by land the famous Khone Phapeng waterfalls, the largest waterfalls in South East Asia, also known as “Niagara of the east”.
This is truly an impressive sight with beautiful nature near the border of Laos and Cambodia, which is teeming with wildlife making this area one of the most breathtaking destinations in Laos.
The general atmosphere that you breathe in the 4000 islands is truly unique, at times alienating, an image of a rural idyll, in which you feel a little out of everything.
As soon as you finish this visit you will return by road to Ban Muang from where you will reach Champasak by ferry.
Lunch at a local restaurant and dinner at the resort in Champasak.(Not included)
Overnight in Champasak (River resort 5* or Nakorn River view 3*)
Day 10: Champassak – Wat Phou – Pakse
Breakfast and visit to the beautiful pre-Angkorian temple of Wat Phu, considered one of the most beautiful temples in South East Asia. An ancient Khmer outpost, Wat Phu later became an important place of Buddhist worship over the centuries; the structures date back to the 11th century AD although the place was considered sacred starting from the 5th century AD.
The complex is built at the base of Mount Phou Khao, considered sacred for its shape reminiscent of the Lingam (phallic shape). Just a short ride away is the Hong Nang Sida stone hospital site, a Lao-Korean joint effort, where restoration in action can be observed. Hong Nang Sida, Hong Tao Tao, Vat Tomo and a few smaller ruins are all part of the VAT PHOU UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE complex. Except for Vat Phou all sites can be visited free of charge.
On our way back to Pakse we take a short detour to drive up to the landmark of the large golden sitting Buddha overlooking the Mekong and Pakse. The panorama is simply a stunning, beautiful and lasting impression from this extraordinary 10 day adventure.
Drop-off at your designated hotel. (Hotel not included)

You will visit a tea plantation, the majestic Tad Fan waterfall, and while walking around the coffee plantation, you will learn how the coffee beans are processed before being sold at the market.
In the following stops you will visit two ethnic minority villages, the first will be Ban Bong Neua or an Alak village and the second will be Ban Kokphung or a Katu village, both famous for their tradition of keeping coffins under their homes.
In the afternoon you will arrive at the picturesque waterfall Tad Lo for swimming, walking or chilling a little while, before the journey continues to Champasak.
